Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Vermont increased last week compared to the week before, the US Department of Labor said Thursday.
New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, rose to 196 in the week ending Sept. 14, from 187 the week before, the Labor Department said.
US jobless claims fell to 219,000 last week, down 12,000 claims from 231,000 the week before on a seasonal basis.
Alaska saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims jumping by 46.1%. Nebraska, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop in new claims, with claims falling by 44.2%.
